At prison bonds are formed

Wednesday, June 9, 2010
By Lisa Gervais, Assistant Editor
Ellen Pach and Jean Salera pass through a metal detector at the Macomb Correctional Facility before standing, arms askew, as a guard pats them down.
They take off their socks and shoes, showing the guard the soles of their feet before she gives them the OK to travel further into the prison.
The guard calls, "Door one," and Pach and Salera, along with prison liaison Michelle Williams, move into another room where they collect tracking devices from another guard. The devices must stay on them their entire visit, keeping tabs on where they are and, with the pull of a string, alerting prison officials of trouble.
Heading out into the courtyard at the facility, sandwiched between 26 Mile Road and Interstate 94, a prisoner holds the door for the group, and as they pass through he says, "God bless you."

Chesterfield man recovering after being shot in the face

Wednesday, July 21, 2010
By Lisa Gervais, Assistant Editor
Twenty-three-year old Markus Green was driving home from Detroit to Chesterfield Township in the early morning of June 22.
Green, who was working for RSIG Security that night, drove his car up Mount Elliott on the city's east side.
Just hours earlier, thousands of revelers had packed Detroit's riverfront for a fireworks display. But at 3 a.m., the streets Green was driving were nearly empty.
As he approached East Outer Drive, a traffic light at the intersection changed and Green, a father to two young children with another due in December, slowed his car to stop.
As he was waiting at the light, a red Jeep Grand Cherokee - which Green felt had been following him since he left work - pulled in front of his vehicle, blocking him at the light. A man was in the driver's seat, a female passenger next to him.
The driver, gun drawn, fired two shots at Green before he had time to react.

Three years ago, Jim and Doreen Hankins opened a gun shop in a small building on 23 Mile Road in Chesterfield Township
The business was a new venture for the Hankins.
Doreen had 20 years experience in the moving and storage field and co-owned a wedding photography business with her husband. She took time off to raise their four children, but after her youngest child started middle school, she wanted to go back to work.
She envisioned opening a bakery or deli.
But after a trip to a gun store with her husband, she lamented the way she was treated by a male staff member, telling him things would be different if she ran a gun store.

By Lisa Gervais, Journal Register News Service
Explosions at a welding supply company in Marysville sent one employee to the hospital Monday as smoke filled the sky and secondary explosions rattled windows.
The initial blast at South Park Welding Supply Inc. on Gratiot Boulevard happened at about 8:30 a.m. and was followed by multiple explosions that triggered a fire.
By the afternoon, Matthew Reeves, a firefighter with the Marysville Fire Department, said the blaze was under control and the department was beginning an investigation into the explosions. He said department personnel wouldn't be able to say what caused the explosion until the investigation was over. The first blast occurred in the rear of the property, eyewitnesses said.
