Slow boat to Shengsi

A few friends of mine decided to make a trip to Shengsi Island and I decided last minute to go along, too. I’ve been in Shanghai for almost four months and had only left the city for a work outing in a water town, so I really wanted to go on an overnight trip.

We didn’t have any solid plans, just to meet at the metro station we live near and head to a bus station where we bought tickets for our two hour bus ride to a port and one hour ferry ride to the island (RMB 109 one-way).

Click the link below to read more and see more photos from the trip! (It's image heavy, so I put it behind a cut)

Market: Lots of seafood, meat, tofu and produce!

Guess what this is....
And guess who chopped it up!

When we got to the island, we had a taxi driver drop us off at a huge open air market with seafood, meat, veggies and more.

We wandered around that part of the island for a while looking for a hotel we liked, but ultimately decided we wanted to check out somewhere by the beach but weren’t really sure where the beach was.

I'm not exactly sure what was going on, but it looked like netting...

After a phone call to Chinese-speaking friends, we got the right vocab to ask the taxi driver to take us to the beach and to a hotel – so he took us to a hotel on the beach.

The Stingray!

We seemed to be the only guests in the hotel and there are a few reasons for that. It’s definitely off season still and we went on off days: Tuesdays and Wednesdays are our days off, so generally when we plan activities it’s pretty light on tourists. There are also apparently more popular island destinations in that particular chain. But, we got great rooms at a good price with free access to the beach (for whatever that’s worth, it was too chilly for swimming and we didn’t spend much time there anyway).

We hopped in another taxi to take us back into town for dinner. After walking around for a little bit, we settled on one of the restaurants down an ally and ordered a tableful of food: stingray, prawns, fried shrimp, other unknown fish, a bowl of snails, eggplant and other greens.

Again, probably because it was an off-day it did seem like we were the only foreigners in town and we got a lot of “Hello!” and “OK!” and everyone we met were very friendly.

No other guests meant room to run on the beach!

The next day before we checked out of the hotel and headed back to Shanghai we spent some time on the beach, which was eerily deserted but kind of nice.

I took some sand home with me
